The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Nolan Allan, goaltender Laurent Brossoit and a 2028 seventh-round pick from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman Jake Furlong, a 2028 fourth-round pick and the contract of retired defenseman Ryan Ellis. The Sharks confirmed the details of the transaction on Thursday afternoon.

Allan is the most intriguing part of the deal. The 22-year-old, a 2021 first-round pick, has NHL experience but has struggled to develop as hoped in Chicago’s system and is no longer projected as a long-term player on the Blackhawks’ blue line. With limited opportunities, a change of scenery gives him another opportunity in San Jose, where he will play a key role with the AHL’s Barracuda.

Allan has played 43 NHL games, scoring eight points, and 109 AHL games with 29 points, all in the Blackhawks organization. He was a WHL champion with Seattle in 2022-2023, earning multiple all-star honors and also winning gold with Team Canada at the 2023 World Juniors.

Brossoit, 32, adds needed depth to the goaltending organization after returning from major knee and hip surgeries. While he’s unlikely to crack the Sharks’ NHL tandem, he’s a clear upgrade as an AHL starter. Brossoit has played six AHL games with Rockford this season, posting a .901 save percentage and 3.38 GAA. In 140 NHL games, he owns a SV% of .911 and was part of Vegas’ 2022-2023 Stanley Cup run.

Chicago’s motivation centers on acquiring Ellis’ $6.25 million contract to help reach the cap, along with a draft pick upgrade and depth defenseman Furlong, who has yet to establish himself at the pro level.
