Nitto ATP Finals candidates Alex de Minaur and Felix Auger-Aliassime exited the Rolex Shanghai Masters in the quarter-finals on Friday.
De Minaur lost to Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4. The 26-year-old Australian had a good chance of climbing as high as No. 5 in the race to Turin, but his quarter-final performance allowed him to at least retain the No. 7 position and even extend a lead over fellow hopefuls Lorenzo Musetti and Casper Ruud.
Auger-Aliassime was upset by Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 6-4. Tenth in the race, the 25-year-old Canadian still needs a big result (and maybe two) in 2025 if he is to qualify, so additional wins in Shanghai would have gone a long way toward that effort.
“I am extremely motivated [to qualify]” said Auger-Aliassime prior to the start of this event. “I started the year very strong and then it was more difficult for a few months in the spring, but I had a great summer in America. There are always ups and downs, but it has been a positive year so far. So if I can make one last push in the coming month to secure my place in Turin, that would be great. But I’m not in it right now, so I have to push some guys out. I really have to play good tennis and get a lot of wins.”
Auger-Aliassime’s season is highlighted by a semifinal appearance at the US Open this summer. De Minaur’s points have become more stable; he is 50-19 in 2025 and has reached at least the quarterfinals of 10 tournaments.
