Shai Hope achieves an astonishing ODI record that only one Indian player has ever achieved

West Indian batsman Shai Hope has broken numerous records with his extended form and superior class at McLean Park in Napier. He has not only crossed the 6000 run mark in ODI cricket but has also created history as a West Indian with his unique record.

West Indies leave for New Zealand for a white-ball tour. They recently concluded the T20I series and are now moving on to the One-Day. In the first match of the ODI series, the West Indian skipper tried to lead from the front with a breathtaking innings.

Despite Shai Hope’s strong show, New Zealand batters successfully chased down the total of 248 runs in less than 34 overs, with 3 balls remaining in the rain-affected match. However, the results of the match do not alleviate the bewilderment portrayed by the West Indian captain.

Shai Hope joins the list of elite batters with a unique record in world cricket

Shai Hope has slowly and very quietly emerged as the modern ODI great from the West Indies. He became the first West Indian batsman to score an international century against all Test-playing nations.

ODI Hundreds against all Test nations:

Ricky Ponting
Herschelle Gibbs
Sachin Tendulkar
Hashim Amla
Shai Hoop*

While West Indies have not had much success in all formats of late, Hope has single-handedly had 11 ODI centuries in his last 75 innings of this decade. He is followed only by the likes of Babar Azam, who had nine centuries, and Quinton de Kock, Virat Kohli, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Shubman Gill, with eight centuries.

This marked Hope’s 19th overall ODI century, as he became the fifth fastest to achieve the feat in terms of innings. Earlier, Babar Azam (102), Hashim Amla (104), Virat Kohli (124) and David Warner (139) were all on the list.

Brian Lara was left behind as Shai Hope completed the century against New Zealand

Shai Hope is currently the captain of the West Indies ODI team and went on to score his sixth hundred in the longer format of white-ball cricket. With this hundred he put his name in the West Indian record books.

He surpassed Brian Lara for scoring the most hundreds by a West Indies captain. Lara, despite being one of the greatest batsmen of all time, played 125 ODIs for the Windies as their captain and could only manage 5 centuries at this stage.

Hope already has six hundred and left him behind. He also joined Lara in the list of most hundreds for the West Indies. Not only is he behind Chris Gayle (25), but he is currently tied at the top spot with the former West Indies Legend.

Ricky Ponting tops the list of most hundreds with 22 to his name, while Virat Kohli follows him on the list with 21 hundreds in 230 and 95 ODIs respectively.

Moreover, only Sri Lankan former keeper Kumar Sangakkara (23) and South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock (32) have more hundreds than Hope as a wicketkeeper-batsman.

Shai Hope is next to Vivian Richards on this list

Shai Hope passed the 6,000-run mark in the longer white-ball format, reaching this number within 142 innings, which is just one more than country legend Sir Vivian Richards.

He currently shares the spot, second on the list, with Quinton de Kock and has surpassed former Indian captains Sourav Ganguly and AB de Villiers, who achieved the feat within 47 ODI innings.

Hope’s hundred came off just 66 balls when he launched Kyle Jamieson for a towering six. The batsman amassed a total of 109 runs off just 69 balls, with 13 fours and four sixes in his innings.
