For the second time this season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wasn’t too downbeat after his feelings against the Oklahoma City Thunder. After losing to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Cup semifinals, Gilgeous-Alexander focused on his team and used the frustration to get better.
When asked how the loss contributes to the Thunder chasing the all-time regular season wins record, the reigning MVP said it is not the focus for him or his team.
“Seventy-three and nine? I mean, the position we’re in right now, what are we, 24-2? My goal is to get better,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “So if we get better than what we are now, it should happen naturally. That’s how I see it. Goals for me are pointless to try to achieve when they’re so far away. You have to take care of everything one step at a time, and tonight we didn’t do that. If we stack nights on top of each other like tonight, we won’t even get close.”
Gilgeous-Alexander also said the Thunder know they’re not going to win the game just by showing up. They know they have to play well to get to the top.
“We can’t be spoiled,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “We can’t think we’re above everything. We, and every team in the league, if you show up one night and don’t do what’s necessary to win, you’re probably not going to win, no matter how talented or what your record looks like. That was the case for us tonight.”
