Several injuries are causing concerns around Olympic hockey rosters

Since the Olympic selections were announced, it has been an uneasy period for a number of high-profile players selected to represent their countries. Within a few days, Bo Horvat, Seth Jones, Devon Toews and Tom Wilson have all been injured, putting teams – and Olympic decision-makers – in a place where they may have to start thinking about their backup plans.

So far, nothing seems serious considering the injuries that have occurred, but it’s a clear indication that no roster is set in stone.

The most concerning moment occurred in Colorado, where Devon Toews was forced to do so leave the game after colliding hard with the legs of the boards, first after a trip by Nikolaj Ehlers. Toews stayed on the ice for an extended period before leaving. Ehlers later said he did not believe he had made contact and called the play “dangerous.” Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour also spoke about the incident after the game, although the focus quickly shifted to Toews’ status.

Elsewhere there was more positive news. According to Pierre LeBrunBo Horvat’s injury is not considered serious and is not expected to impact his Olympic availability. Head coach of the Islanders Patrick Roy confirmed this Horvat skated on his own Saturday morning and called his progress encouraging, although a return timeline remains unclear.

Seth Jones also avoided his worst fears after making an early exit from the Winter Classic when he was hit by a puck. Elliotte Friedman reports this there’s no indication of a long-term problem, and Jones is listed as doubtful against Colorado.

Wilson, Toews and Horvat: injuries in early Olympic selection

Tom Wilson’s situation is worth watching. The Capitals forward left the game after falling awkwardly on his right leg following a heavy reverse hit from Connor Murphy. Head coach Spencer Carbery said the injury doesn’t seem overly seriouswhile teammates emphasized Wilson’s importance. Wilson led Washington with 22 goals and 42 points and was just named to the Team Canada roster.

Because injuries pile up so quickly after the selection is announced, questions naturally follow. If the setbacks continue, could opportunities arise for players like Adam Fox, Connor Bedard or Matthew Schaefer? For now, the teams wait – and hope that this streak of bad Olympic timing is almost over.
