On Sunday afternoon, the New Jersey Devils had a metropolitan matchup of a Split-SSS slof, in which half of the club traveled to Québec City to take on the Ottawa senators and the other half lagged to see the capitals in Washington at home.
The Devils sent a few veterans to play in Videotron Center, including Evgenii Dadonov, Dawson Mercer, Paul Cotter and Connor Brown. For the senators, the selection was their entire NHL team, including Brady Tkachuk, Thomas Chabot and Claude Giroux. At the end, the senators dominated 2-0, with shots 32-14 in favor of the senators.
Georgi Romanov was the starting goalkeeper for the Devils, with Jakub Malek as his backup. Romanov remained all three periods in the net and stopped 30 of the 31 shots. On the other side of the ice, the Senators Linus Ullmark held for the duration of the game, so that all 14 shots of the Devils stopped on goal.

The game remained scoreless after a quiet first period, despite the senators who surpassed the Devils 11-2. Both teams, however, collected the pace in the second, although the scoreboard did not reflect it. At the start of the period, the Devils did not succeed in a 5-on-3 Power Play. Then Tim Stützle received a penalty shot after a collision with Cale Addison pushed him into the net, but Romanov held.

Both teams wanted to score in the third, but it was the senators who eventually left for five minutes, on a Power-Play goal thanks to Stephen Halliday. The devils could not recover and Olle Lyckell closed the deal at the end of the game with an empty net goal.
Presis of promotion for the senators will continue on Tuesday evening in Québec City against the Montreal Canadiens. In the meantime, the Devils will only play a match on Thursday evening when they are confronted with the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden.
