Ottawa Senators General Manager Steve Staios confirmed on Tuesday that attacker Alex Forenton will not return to the organization.
Staios said he recently spoke With the agent of Forenton and both parties concluded that a “fresh start” was the best way. “I have conversations with the agent. I think both parties agree that it would be best for everyone to have a new start for Alex,” Staios explained. He added that he “will gauge the market to see if there is an exchange.”
The decision follows the announcement of the NHL that Forenton is eligible to return to play. Despite that statement, the senators and the 26-year-old winger will go their own way.
Cap Resource Puckpedia noticed This is because Ottawa Forenton has previously published a qualifying offer, there is no formal mechanism to completely remove it from the club’s reserve list. Instead, he would stay on their reserve list of 90 players until he was traded or until July 1, 2027, if he could reach an unlimited free desk. He currently does not count for the limit of 50 Standard Player Contract (SPC) of Ottawa.
Forenton was last appeared in the NHL during the 2021–22 season, when he picked up 18 goals and 14 assists at 79 games with the senators. Since then he has loved the competition and has recently signed a contract with HC Ambrì-Piotta in the National League of Switzerland.
While his departure closes the door during his time in Ottawa, Forenton will try to restore his career abroad, while the senators will continue without a player who is once seen as part of their core in the long term.
