In the run -up to the free desk, there was unbridled speculation about whether Claude Giroux would again sign with the Ottawa Senators and, perhaps more importantly, what it would cost. Fortunately, the senators did not forced their fans to wait for Boded Breath and announced the one year of $ 2 million on 29 June 2025.
At the age of 37, Giroux is not the franchise player he once was, but he remains an important veteran in a Young Senators -Roster. His experience and versatility will be crucial if Ottawa is preparing to return to the play-offs in 2025-26.

How Giroux became here
In 2021-22 the flyers had to make a difficult decision. After he had fallen to last place in the Metropolitan Division, the team had to rebuild. Giroux, the leader of the team, was a hanging unlimited free agent and wore a cap -hit of $ 8.275 million. Moving him would hopefully start the process. But Giroux was a flyers not. That season was his 10th as a team captain, and he had played the second most points and matches in the franchise history. Moving him would not be easy, even if it is only for the sentimental factor.
Yet a deal was closed with the Florida Panthers for Owen Tippett, a pick in the first round and a pick on the third round. In the last 18 games of the season, he placed 23 points and the Panthers was the first to end up in the Atlantic Ocean, but they entered the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round, sent Florida to home in four games, enduring Giroux’s striving for a Stanley Cup.

Giroux went for the first time that summer in his career in that summer, and while Florida would have liked to have kept the skilled veteran, Ottawa made an offer, The prospect of returning home was too good to leave. “When the idea was to come home again and play for the sens, I didn’t look back afterwards,” said Giroux. “I would not sign here if I didn’t think we had the chance to win the cup … I am not saying that we will win the cup this year, but the plan is to build on it and have baby steps.”
Giroux’s role in 2025-26
Since his arrival, Giroux has been a valuable second-line winger and was crucial to get Ottawa in the play-offs for the first time in seven years and to finish second with five points in six games. When he decided to sign in Ottawa again, it was a clear explanation that he believed in what was built In Ottawa and wanted to be part of it.
But Giroux is no longer the top-line winger he once was; In the past three seasons, his pointed totals have been withdrawn from 79 to 64 to 50. This season he will probably stand in line with Shane Pinto and Ridly Gray on the third line, with Fabian Zetterlund expected to take the right side next to Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle.
Giroux was fantastic in the Faceoff Dot last season, so the senators led a profit percentage of 61% while he took almost 1,000 draw. He was also one of the best owners of Ottawa and finished the top five in Corsi for percentage (CF%) and expects plus/min. He was even better in the play -offs, jumped from a 53.6 CF% to a 64.3 CF%, with only Stutzle and the averages of Tkachuk.
It is not surprising that Giroux was also the best attacker of Ottawa on the Penaltymoord. Last season he had on average almost two and a half minutes per game while he played shorts, most among attackers, but finished the ninth in goals against per 60 minutes. He was not that strong on the power play, but other players are expected to be larger this season and take bigger minutes in that area.
Giroux will never again flirt with 80 points; In fact, he probably doesn’t have much gas in the tank anymore. But despite his age, he is still one of Ottawa’s best defensive attackers. He is expected to be a mentor and an unofficial leader this season, together with Pinto and Gray to give them the skill and experience to close the best players in the game. Although he is no longer a gamebreaker, with him in their line -up, the senators are much more willing to win games in the play -offs.
