Seasider (Downbytheseaside) confirmed his potential with a last to first success in the Listed $75,000 Western Regional Championship Final at Bathurst on Friday evening.

The race was a wide open affair with Nathan Turnbull preparing two runners and Amanda Turnbull three, including Seasider. She chose to control the informant She The Devil. However, punters favored her other runner Baby You’re The One, who was backed as favourite, but there was also strong support for Art of Terror, who was drawn on pole. Despite his impressive Heat win when he didn’t feel like it, Seasider was kept safe in the betting.

Ashleigh Delosa, who got the ride on Seasider, was walking from the wide draw back to the back of the field when the mobile was released.

SEASIDER JAN 30 REPEAT

Flash Azarat showed enough speed to take the lead early, but he surrendered to Baby You’re The One. Last year’s winner, Hunter Shannon, left early to race outside the leader. Outsider Betting Ranger took off from the back after the bell and Seasider was still in the back, but with coverage.

To the surprise of many, the Betting Ranger, who did an excellent job, got the better of Baby You’re The One, but could not withstand the final burst of Seasider, who prevailed by four meters and Art of Terror finished strongly in third place. It was a great effort from Betting Ranger and he is ready to win a race soon.

Seasider scored 1.56.5 and his performance was made even more impressive by coming from so far back to win convincingly.

Winning driver Ashleigh Delosa was particularly pleased with the way the race went, given the fast early pace.

I really liked it, especially when that horse went three wide early. I thought I better sit on the back of this one. It really worked in his favor. He traveled very well. I didn’t want to leave too early because he can hit the front and take it out. He definitely felt like the winner.

It’s very special to get a winner for Amanda. She’s been very good to me. She pushes me when she can, so I’m very grateful.

There is nothing special about Seasider breeding. His mother is the New Zealand MCardle mare Miss MCardle who had only two starts. She also left behind the mare Miss Mach who won five races and recorded a best time of 1.52.9.

But given his two recent victories, it won’t be long before Seasider wins at Menangle Park HQ and he will be particularly suited to the big circuit.
