Allan Mitchell’s final analysis in The Athletic raised a surprising but interesting suggestion surrounding Edmonton Oilers prospect Ike Howard — specifically whether the young winger could factor into trade talks as the 2025-2026 deadline approaches.
Mitchell lays out a scenario that largely depends on how the Oilers’ forward group develops in the coming months. With Matthew Savoie taking on a more prominent role – even earning five-on-five minutes alongside Connor McDavid – Edmonton suddenly has internal competition in the top nine. Assuming Savoie stays where he is and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is moved to a central role on the third line, there may be room for Howard.
Mitchell writes:
“If Howard performs well in Bakersfield, he will force a recall. If Savoie proves he can stay on the McDavid line, it might be able to shake loose Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for the No. 3 center job if he’s healthy. That would be an ideal situation for Howard. It would mean losing a veteran, but the rookie’s development is important. He could be a key scorer in the playoffs if the coaches trust Howard by then.”
However, Mitchell also suggests that there is a scenario where things don’t turn out this way. He notes:
Howard won’t be traded if he shows up offensively. If he’s only moderately effective: “Another NHL team might have what Edmonton needs heading into the deadline with a top prospect like Howard. The Oilers’ top prospects are Savoie and Howard, with Savoie currently establishing himself as a starter.”
Howard has the opportunity to follow his own path
Howard’s path is heavily dependent on performance. If he excels in the AHL, he will force management into a recall. If he doesn’t, Mitchell warns fans not to ignore the possibility of Howard becoming part of a bigger deal.
If his role diminishes or the coaching staff cools him down, a trade is out of the question. It remains unlikely, but certainly possible, depending on the options that become available.
