Scottish media agree on Lyndon Dykes as Birmingham City man shines in historic win against Denmark News: The72 – Football League News

Birmingham City striker Lyndon Dykes started for Scotland as they booked their place in the 2026 World Cup with a win over Denmark on Tuesday evening.

Scotland beat Denmark 4-2 on Tuesday evening for the 2026 World Cup, the first time they have qualified for a World Cup since France ’98 and Birmingham City striker Lyndon Dykes started the match at the top.

The 30-year-old is a regular for his national side and earned his 46th cap for Scotland on Tuesday, but did not contribute to his 10 goals.

Birmingham City signed Dykes from QPR last year and he has scored just once in 25 League One games last season and has scored twice in 13 Championship games so far this season.

Scotland gives Lyndon Dykes heavy viewing figures despite Denmark’s victory

Dykes is often a striker who does the dirty work, and that is exactly what he did against Denmark. He played just over an hour and positioned himself both on the ground and in the air, defending a lot from the top.

It manifested itself in a tough round of judging for Dykes. Daily Mail handed him a 5/10, writing: “It was always going to be a difficult transition to the top, and as expected he was forced to feed on leftovers. He won his fair share of aerial duels and brought others into the game on the rare occasion he dropped deep.”

Edinburgh News gave him a 6/10 and said, “Given the nod [Che] Adams led the line as Clarke looked for freshness in the final third. Lack of aggression and hold-up play weren’t great. No clear view of target. It’s no real surprise that he withdraws just after the hour.’

Meanwhile, The Herald gave Dykes a more impressive rating of 7/10. They wrote of the BCFC striker: ” Brought in for freshness in the front line and brought about a real change. Constantly running and battling in physical duels, but forced to do more work in his own half than he would have liked.”

How close Lyndon Dykes came to leaving Birmingham City

He may not be the flashiest forward, but Dykes does a certain job, and it’s a job that often goes unnoticed and one he does relatively well.

For BCFC, this season should be about stabilizing in the Championship and someone with Dykes’ physicality and experience will be key. But after this season, it may be time for Blues and Dykes to part ways.

His contract expires in 2027 and he almost left during the summer. Hibernian attempted to sign Dykes from Birmingham City, with Hibs’ sporting director Malky Mackay even commenting on the matter.

He said earlier this month: ‘It’s quite common knowledge that we’ve had our discussions with Lyndon and Birmingham but we haven’t been able to get them yet.

“It’s that simple. Some do and some don’t. In the end we didn’t do that. So we’re moving away from that.”

Birmingham City will be back in action at home this weekend against Norwich City.
