Scottie Scheffler has already earned more than $ 90 million on the golf course and finished much more, but if we know something about the world no. 1, it is that he is a man of simple flavors.

He plays golf because he loves the competition and the grinding to get better and, well, because he is really good at it. He loves his chipotle and his routine. He appreciates his faith and his family. He is also not one that we have learned to spend on something that is too lush.

Although apparently there is at least An thing that he will pay too much for.

On Thursday at the Fedex St. Jude Championship, fresh from an opening round 67, Scheffler was asked if he was superstitious. “A bit,” he said, adding that he had the same Yardage booklet for the past four years and often uses the same divot and ball marker every round.

He even loves the divot tool that he went to the extreme – eBay! – To buy a replacement when he lost the original. But this was not just a divot tool.

“It’s from Cypress Point,” said Scheffler. “But I don’t use it because it is from Cypress Point. It is exactly the right size and it is metal, so they no longer make that kind of divot tool, so I found one there and I held it.

“I bought it in the store,” he continued. “I bought one last year or maybe two years ago, and I lost it at one point, and I was literally unable to find another divot tool. Then I went on eBay, found a Cypress-Point ball marker, paid for 50 dollars. Then I went back this year and they were a bit cheaper on the site so I got a few extras.”

Is there a certain, deep reason that he likes it so much?

“Just habit. No reason for that. I like it,” he said. “It’s a good size, it has the US on it. I think it’s pretty cool.”

And if you wonder, yes, someone there sent a ball marker directly to Scottie Scheffler, who said he used his real name when buying.

“He sent it to me and wrote me a small note and everything,” said Scheffler. “He was a nice guy.”

In Non-Ball-Marker News, Scheffler’s 67 placed him five behind the first round of Akshay Bhatia on Thursday, who fired 62. The second round of Scheffler is already underway, although the current FedEx Cup leader will not have a problem to continue to next week’s BMW championship or the Tour Championship of the following week.

“Today was a good day,” he said. “I did some solid things. Felt like I was close to playing a really great round, but ended with a solid round. In general, a decent start.”
