Scotland: Western Wildcats rise to second in the Men’s Premiership

In the only match of the day, the Western Wildcats men traveled to Fettes to take on Grange and recorded a comprehensive 5-1 win.

The result leaves the Wildcats a point ahead of Watsonians and just two points behind top-placed Edinburgh University, with an excellent match against Grove Menzieshill still to come. The Wildcats could therefore become king of the jungle before the winter break. The reversal meant little to Grange as their place in the top six had already been secured.

Western led by three at the break, Fraser Moran opened with a lift over the keeper on ten minutes, a penalty corner was saved twice in the second quarter, but in the ensuing scramble Nikki Homfray finished off, with Cameron Banks deflecting a cross from the right into the net just before half-time.

A moment for Grange five minutes into the second half, in a scramble in the circle Livio Belotti put the finishing touch for 3-1. However, Wildcats were undeterred and Homfray finished a break down the left for the Wildcats fourth. As Grange pushed to get back into the match they were caught in a Wildcats breakaway and Fraser Moran added a fifth.

The crucial Women’s Premiership match between Glasgow University and Wildcats, which was due to take place last Thursday evening, fell victim to cold and frost… and so the composition of the top six is yet to be resolved.

Currently, Wildcats are three points behind Grange in sixth place, but with a better goal difference. So three points from their excellent game against Glasgow would take them into that coveted sixth spot… but the Cats need to win. But that’s for another day.
