Even by Washington standards, this was so foolish.
Even by Schumerian standards, which is a very low bar, this shutdown was completely stupid. Millions of Americans were greatly aggravated.
It achieved absolutely nothing. With a few bells and whistles, Speaker Mike Johnson House CR’s original bill will be passed, the speaker will be here shortly.
Democrats didn’t get the $1.5 trillion in additional spending they wanted. They didn’t get health care spending for illegal immigrants.
They have not reversed valid Medicaid requirements. They didn’t undo Trump’s big, beautiful bill. As far as I know they haven’t received anything.
Oh wait, according to reports they got a promise from Majority Leader Thune that they could vote on a bill of their choice. That could mean an Obamacare spending bill.
Perhaps it could mean a vote on a different topic. Perhaps the Democrats would like to vote on a third term for President Trump.
Seems like a good idea to me. But it’s up to them.
The people who suffered from this Schumerian catastrophe were all laid-off federal employees, forced to leave without pay. Soldiers in danger. Delays for food stamps and WIC. A complete mess with air traffic controllers illegally walking off the job in protest of their missed payments. The cancellation of a trillion flights across the country enraged ordinary people.
Moreover, the president has threatened to fine air traffic controllers who have quit their jobs. I remember Ronald Reagan fired them all when they went on illegal strikes in the 80s.
Trump is offering a $10,000 bonus to those who stay on the job. That sounds like a good idea.
But in fact, millions of highly agitated Americans will wonder why they continue with this completely stupid exercise that caused so much heartburn.
Fortunately, Mr. Trump and the Republican majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate refused to give in to Schumeresque blackmail to try to keep spending all that money on Obamacare and health care in general without any serious debate.
And one idea of Mr. Trump that I really like is to have health care spending go directly to individuals, perhaps through their health savings accounts, but not through the health insurance industry and the failed system with runaway costs that the industry has created.
