Scenes from Leafs’ morning skate: Matthews, Knies, Roy’s status to be determined vs. Blue Jackets

Before embarking on a five-game road trip, the Toronto Maple Leafs held an eventful practice at the Ford Performance Centre.

Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies and Nicolas Roy all skated in gray extra uniforms. Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed that the status of Matthews, Knies and Roy has yet to be determined for Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jackets.

“Knies, Matthews and Roy all practiced today. It looked good, training was done, but we still have to see about tomorrow, so that’s where they are now,” Berube said. “But it was good that they were there and completed the training and went through all the exercises.”

Matthews led the play at the end of practice, where Berube instructed his team “the glass is half full, not half empty.”

“That’s how you have to look at things,” Berube said. “The glass is half full. We have an opportunity to come in here tomorrow and get two points and that has to be our focus and then we go from there to the next game.”

Easton Cowan was reunited with John Tavares and William Nylander on the top line, while Max Domi centered a second line with Nick Robertson and Calle Jarnkrok on the wings. It looks like Jacob Quillan will drop back into the lineup and take rushes with Dakota Joshua and Matias Maccelli, while Sammy Blais alternates playing on the left wing.

Steven Lorentz, Scott Laughton and Bobby McMann formed the fourth line during Tuesday’s practice.

Jake McCabe returns to the lineup on Wednesday. McCabe took a puck to the face during Saturday’s loss to the Montreal Canadiens and did not return. Berube said he’s using McCabe and Simon Benoit as his shutdown pair this year, and the veteran defenseman talked about the aftermath of the puck hit.

“That happens quite a bit, to be honest,” McCabe said. “Puck lift your stick. My face immediately exploded on this one. They wanted to make sure there’s no fracture, which there isn’t. I got lucky, I guess, with that one.”

Joseph Woll will probably start for the fifth game in a row. Woll was pulled during the second period of Saturday’s game, where he was the only player who should have been exempt from criticism as the Maple Leafs capitulated against the Canadiens’ strange rushes.

“He was so mad at me for pulling him the other day, but I like that. He wanted to be there and fight, and that’s good,” Berube said of Woll.
