Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold lands in the US, priced at $2,899

Samsung has officially introduced the Galaxy Z TriFold, its most ambitious foldable phone yet, in the United States. It was released today (January 30) with a hefty price tag, $2,899 for the 512GB Crafted Black variant, and it certainly lives up to expectations, or at least it does for some.

The team behind this device has done some crazy things: they’ve designed a double-hinge system that allows the phone to unfold twice, revealing a huge 10-inch screen. The main screen measures 9.9 inches around the edges, with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits. This is an impressive productivity powerhouse for a phone that fits comfortably in your pocket when closed. On the outside, you get a full-fledged 6.5-inch screen with a similar specification: Full HD+, up to 120 Hz and a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, so you can see what you’re doing outside. Oh, and Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 is on hand to protect the exterior screen.

When folded it is 12.9 mm thick, but when unfolded it is only 3.9 mm thin. Don’t worry about it breaking; Samsung has done the usual by putting titanium in the hinge housing and conducting rigorous testing to ensure it can withstand 200,000 folds, which is roughly equivalent to 100 times a day for 5 years. Naturally, it has an IP48 rating, making it waterproof and dustproof.

Under the hood is a unique Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and 16GB of RAM to handle it all, but only the 512GB model is available in the US. Battery life is excellent at 5,600mAh, more than any previous Samsung foldable, and should deliver up to 17 hours of video playback on a single charge. Charging is fast using the typical options: 45W wired, 15W wireless and 4.5W reverse wireless.

Photography enthusiasts will be happy with a 200 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 10 MP telephoto with 3x zoom, as well as a 10 MP front camera and another on the outside, both of which can record 4K video.

Galaxy AI is extensively integrated and numerous tools are available, such as Photo Assist and Genative Edit for image editing, Sketch to Image for quick sketching, and Gemini Live, which provides assistance based on what the item sees or hears. Of course, if you get tired of that, you can always switch to Samsung DeX mode, which turns the phone into a desktop, with all the bells and whistles of a real keyboard/mouse.

Availability is limited, but you can get it from Samsung.com or a Samsung Experience Store for a closer look. The only color available is Crafted Black, which has a beautiful matte finish and a bit of texture to keep things interesting.
