The Sabers faced setbacks early in the season, including an 0-3-0 start and constant roster shuffling due to injuries. Despite these pitfalls, Buffalo showed glimpses of fight as they currently sit just three points out of a wild card spot in a neck-and-neck Eastern Conference. On the other hand, they are in last place in the Atlantic Division at the time of writing, with a disappointing offense to prove it. The Sabers have proven that they can overcome adversity and respond with courage and determination. The next four games will serve as a testing ground to see what this team is really capable of.

How are the Sabers doing so far?

There weren’t too many expectations for Buffalo’s team, which has struggled in a fourteen-year playoff drought with little to no roster changes over the summer. Even before the season started, injuries started piling up for the Sabres. A little further into the season another crucial piece was lost when center Josh Norris fell after a face-off, it was later assessed that he had suffered an upper body injury and was out for a significant amount of time.

Eliminated players and an 0-3-0 start caused negativity to loom within the Sabers fan base as the team and organization searched for an answer to the abysmal start. Buffalo then started stringing together some wins, including statement victories against division rivals namely the Ottawa Senators, the Florida Panthers, the Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. While the trend for the Sabers seemed to continue to point upward, the team was derailed by more injuries and offensive production dropped.

Riding a seven-game streak, expectations were high for the Sabers as they played the struggling Blues on home soil. Even though he scratched Jordan Kyrou and starting backup Joel Hofer, who had a 5.02 goals against average (GAA) and a .836 save percentage (SV%), the Blues took care of business against the Sabers in a game where offense failed to convert into opportunities and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s netminding woes proved to be the difference.

What needs to change for the Sabres?

Injuries have caused Buffalo to mix and match their lines in recent games. Finding consistency with incoming and outgoing personnel can be a challenging task for any player. Alternate captain Tage Thompson has found himself in this situation while skating with the American Hockey League Calls with Isak Rosen and Noah Ostlund for the most recent match against the Blues. Individually, they have proven they can contribute with their own resources, but bringing them together is a big ask, especially when the goal is to win games immediately.

Absences due to injury and illness are only part of the Sabres’ underlying situation. While they have contributed to the modest number of skaters due to the unfamiliarity of new linemates, adaptability is a skill that makes a winning player in the NHL. The Sabres’ next four games will test this team’s identity. Can they adapt to each other and develop team chemistry over the next week, or will this stretch of games split them and push the Sabers closer to a 15th straight season of missing the playoffs?
