Observations from Yankees spring training Thursday:
A good bell
Cody Bellinger went 0-for-1 with a walk.
More importantly, he left feeling healthy after playing right field in his first spring training in nearly a week.
The former MVP – who had been out of action due to a mild back injury – will start again on Friday.
Black brand
Paul Blackburn was unable to extend his spring success, allowing two runs, three hits (one home run) and two walks against the Twins while striking out three in 2 ¹/₃ innings.
The 32-year-old had thrown six scoreless innings through his first two spring training games.
Caught my attention
Ryan McMahon’s shortstop experiment hasn’t gone according to plan.
After the starting third baseman made an error on a fairly straightforward grounder in his debut at shortstop Tuesday, McMahon made another mistake Thursday after sliding on his knee to get a ball in the hole, then forcing a wild throw to first base.
McMahon later made another impressive drive through the middle, but again threw it off target.
Friday’s schedule
Cam Schlittler will make his spring debut in Friday night’s game against the Rays at Steinbrenner Field.
Oswaldo Cabrera will also make his first appearance of the spring and return to action for the first time since breaking his ankle in May.
