While nothing has been confirmed, a fight between Charles Johnson and Bruno Silva has been confirmed Laerte Viana dies on March 14. Silva was originally scheduled to face Lone’er Kavanagh, but the latter has withdrawn from the fight.
The deal is that Kavanagh will now face Moreno in the main event of UFC Mexico City on February 28. The news was first reported by To Zullino.
Nothing official except Lone’er Kavanagh on his way to huge opportunities
While nothing is official, it looks like this one will go ahead, especially when Charles Johnson replaces Lone’er Kavanagh on March 14.
As it stands, former champion Moreno is ranked fifth in an exciting flyweight division, while Kavanagh comes in at fifteenth. Moreno is 2-3 in his last five fights, but this streak includes a loss in a title fight and a loss to Tatsuro Taira, a man who may be next in line for the title.
Former CageWarriors man Kavanagh is 2-1 in the UFC. After acquiring a contract in the Contender Series, he impressed in his debut in China against undefeated Jose Ochoa. The problem many will have with Kavanagh getting a shot against a top five opponent is that he is coming off a knockout loss. In August last year, the British Top Team candidate competed against the experienced Charles Johnson. Although he won the fight relatively easily, Johnson caught him and knocked him out in the second round, handing him his first professional loss.
Too much, too soon for Kavanagh?
Lone’er Kavanagh is a top talent. Still only 26 years old, he is extremely versatile, flexible on his feet and has room to grow in the sport. With that being said, is it too much too soon? Why throw him into an extremely difficult fight when he has suffered a loss? It could destroy all his potential.
The Bruno Silva fight made a lot of sense. The Brazilian is very experienced, but when he steps up to the elite level, he falls short. It would have been a logical, good test for Kavanagh. Instead, he’s thrown to the wolves for his first main event.

There is also the question of whether there was no one higher ranked to replace Asu Almabayev? So far the only booked fight in the top 15 is Amir Albazi vs Kyoji Horiguchi. Tim Elliott would have been a logical choice. He has yet to land a UFC card despite being a company man for several years. He impressed in his return at UFC 319, choking Kai Asakura in the second round. His and Moreno’s styles match well and it’s a fight that is sure to entertain fans.
