Multiple reports from both the Calgary Flames and outside reporters suggest that the long-awaited Rasmus Andersson trade is imminent. Rumors of potential trade packages abound, but a few appear to have persisted as legitimate possibilities.
The reported demand for Andersson is a first-round pick plus a first-round prospect/player. This verbiage can be a bit confusing, but first-round prospect/player generally refers to a player who was either drafted in the first round or is considered someone who would be taken in the first round if a re-draft were to occur. For example, Logan Stankoven was a second-round pick but is a first-round player.
Here’s a look at the rumors going around.
Detroit Red Wings
- Nate Danielson
- 2027 1st round pick
The Detroit Red Wings were a top destination for Quinn Hughes, but that obviously didn’t work out when he was traded to the Minnesota Wild. The Red Wings are fighting for the top spot in the Atlantic Division, so it makes sense that they would go big game hunting.
This offer corresponds to the asking price, but Danielson is not a real top candidate. Drew wrote about how Danielson could be a great replacement for Mikael Backlund when he retires, but he projects as a mid-six center with a defensive style. He won’t be the high-end guy the Flames need, but is still a surefire NHLer.
The first of 2027 would take the Flames to two firsts in each of the next two drafts.
Boston Bruins
- Mason Lohrei
- 2026 1st round pick
This is the trade that circulates the most on the Internet. Lohrei isn’t a high-end player either, but fits the mold of what Craig Conroy has been aiming for recently on the left side of the blueline. He’s a 6-foot-4, 218-pound two-way defenseman, but his fundamentals are pretty poor for what has been a decent Bruins team this season.
The first of 2026 would give Calgary three first-round picks in the upcoming draft.
Dallas stars
- Emil Hemming
- 2027 1st round pick
- 2026 2nd round pick
This is relatively new and didn’t come from a very reliable source, but it did seem to stick around online. Hemming just had a solid World Juniors with Finland and coincidentally was called up to the Stars’ first rounder the year they traded for Chris Tanev, and that pick was on the table to be included in that trade. Hemming is a right-shooting right winger who has put up great numbers in the OHL over the past two seasons.
Adding two more picks would also be great in an Andersson trade. The first round is in 2027, so it would give the Flames two picks in each of the next two drafts, although Dallas’ pick will likely be quite low since they are legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. However, adding another high pick in 2026 would certainly make up for this.
