The Portuguese tactician was one of the most quotable head coaches in the Premier League, providing brilliant sound bites and easy headlines every week
It was fitting that the comments he made at his final press conference were his ultimate undoing, as the Red Devils sacked him just one day after he made a very pointed statement following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
It’s a good time to look back at some of his best quotes from his fourteen-month spell at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim: The best quotes from the former Man Utd head coach
Just a month into his job, Amorim already sounded as if the club had sucked the joy out of his life after a 4-3 defeat to Spurs in the League Cup:
“I will think about that tomorrow, tonight I don’t feel anything. I can’t tell you anything about what is good. Tomorrow I can say many things. Tonight we lost and then we have to think for a night and then we will get a lot of good out of this match tomorrow.”
“We can’t think in that way that winning silverware will make everything right. It will be a long road, we are improving, our aim is to win the Premier League, how long it will take I don’t know.”
In December 2024, Amorim admitted that United were in battle against relegation:
“That’s very clear. It’s one of the most difficult moments in Man Utd’s history and we have to tackle it honestly.”
He added: āWe must engage and focus on survival.ā

Amorim in January 2025, when United had won twice in ten games and were 13th in the Premier League:
“Imagine what this is for a Manchester United fan. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who loses more than the previous coach. I am fully aware of that. We are perhaps the worst team in the history of Manchester United.”
Later that same month, Amorim admitted that the team had not improved under him:
“It’s a bit embarrassing to be coach of Manchester United and lose a lot of games.”
After losing the UEFA Europa League final to Spurs in May:
“If the board and fans think I’m not the right man, I’ll go in the next day without any discussion about compensation.” (He will receive Ā£10 million in compensation after his dismissal.)
After losing to Grimsby Town in the League Cup in August:
“If we don’t show up, you feel that something has to change and you are not going to change another 22 players.”
A few days later, Amorim admitted that he sometimes hated his players and wanted to quit:
“To be completely honest, every time we have a defeat like that in the future, I will be like this. I’m going to say that sometimes I hate my players and sometimes I love my players. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to stay here for 20 years.”

In September, Amorim insisted he would never abandon his 3-4-2-1 system:
“No, no, no. No one. Not even the Pope will change…
“This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life. So I won’t change that.”
Eight days later he admitted he didn’t know what would happen when United took the field:
āIt’s normal for the fans, they don’t know what’s going to happen in the next match. To be completely honest, I have an idea, but I don’t know how it’s going to turn out and I’m the manager of the team.ā
In October, he said he didn’t care about being fired:
“You’re afraid of losing your job if you have to pay the bills and I don’t feel that way. I just want to continue with this. But if we don’t win games, that’s the suffering I have. It’s not the fear of losing the job. I don’t care.”
“I’ll tell you when we’re done with the game and you can see me: I don’t care about my job. That hurts when I don’t win games or when I fail. That’s what hurts me the most.”
After Man Utd lost 1-0 to 10-man Everton in November, Amorim said his side were nowhere near the level of the best teams in the Premier League.
“We are not there yet. Not even close to the point where we should be fighting for the best positions in the league. We have a lot to do and we have to be perfect to win games. We were not perfect today.”
And finally, at his last press conference in charge, Amorim practically begged to be fired:
“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the head coach. I know my name is not Conte, Tuchel or Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United.”
“This will continue for 18 months, or until the board decides to change. I’m not going to stop. I will do my job until another man comes here to replace me.”
