While the Ryder Cup will catch international headlines this fall, another transatlantic wave tradition will quietly bring players from Scotland and the United States together in a tough competition that is rooted in friendship and history.

The Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Scotland and the Country Club of North Carolina (CCNC) in Pinehurst will be re -confronted in their annual competition, a fixture that combines companionship with competition. Assuming the only recurring event of its kind between American and Scottish clubs, the series underlines the long -term connection between the two legendary institutions.

CCNC is the only club in the United States with a mutual relationship with Royal Dornoch, the home of the legendary architect Donald Ross. That band was officially made in 2017, but follows its roots almost 50 years ago. Since the early 1960s, CCNC have made pilgrimages to Dornoch, and signed a frame scroll by Royal Dornoch Captain WB Alford in 1971 still proudly hangs in the club’s Dornoch Grill.

The clubs started to hold informal competitions in the 1970s before formalized annual competitions in 2011. Matches alternately between Pinehurst and Dornoch, each emphasized by a traditional dinner. The prize is the Roly Bluck Putter, a vintage club with wooden connected after a late Royal Dornoch captain that helped establish the series. Nowadays the event contains 12 players per side, including the professional of each club, and is officially mentioned on the annual competition calendar of Royal Dornoch.

The relationship also emphasizes an architectural connection. The Dogwood Course of CCNC was designed by Ellis Maples, son of Frank Maples, who worked together with Ross as a course construction supervisor and chief inspector of Pinehurst No. 2.

The schedule of Royal Dornoch in mutual clubs contains a prestigious list such as Royal Melbourne, Royal Sydney, Royal Auckland and Royal Cape. The place of CCNC among them is unique, which represents both the historic bond between Donald Ross and Pinehurst, and a transatlantic friendship that continues to become stronger at every competition.
