Rose Bay Home from Holocaust Survivor sells $ 1 million via Reserve – Realestate.com.au

98 Dover RD, Dover Heights sold for $ 9,725,000 prior to the auction – $ 1 million above the intended reserve price.

A house by Rose Bay owned by survivors of Holocaust sold $ 1 million above the intended reserve price prior to the auction.

The modest residence with three bedrooms with iconic view of the harbor on almost 500m² land on 98 Dover RD reached $ 9,725,000 via Ray White Double Bay’s Dion Markovics and Warren Ginsberg.

It is clear that the reserve would be $ 8,725,000. But two buyers had fought over it before the planned auction, so the price was many expectations.

It had been held for more than 60 years by the Grunstein family.

The Grunstein family had been 98 Dover RD, Rose Bay for more than 60 years.

John and Barbara Grunstein were both Hungarian survivors of the Holocaust.

While John died many years ago, Barbara died last December. Last year, at the age of 98, she appeared in a video of the NSW Jewish board or deputies -video in which she described her Holocaust experience.

“In 1944, Germany invaded Hungary,” she said.

“The Germans came to our house and my father gave them a glass of wine and the next day we were brought to the ghetto.

“There was very little food.”

They were then shipped to Aushwitz, where she and her sisters were selected for work, and three weeks later they were brought to Germany where they worked in a factory that made bullets.

They ended up in Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp.

“We were hungry and thirsty, there was no food at all,” she said.

The buyers are planning to bring down the old house and to rebuild it.

“We were liberated by the British and brought back to Hungary.”

She married John in 1949 and moved to Australia. “I have two children, six grandchildren and 10 great -grandchildren,” she says proudly.

In a footnote of the video, the producers say that Barbara has a very important message: “She tells everyone that it is important not to hate.”

Barbara was well considered because of her charity contributions and her dedication to share her story in the Jewish museum.

Their sons, Professor Ron Grunstein, a consultant doctor in sleep disorders for more than 30 years and a pioneer in improving patient care in sleep medicine, and retired lawyer Gary Grunstein, managed the sale.

It is understanding that the buyer intends to build a new home on the site.

More than 120 buyers inspected the house during the four -week campaign.

The first guide had been $ 7 million – $ 7.7 million, which was later revised to $ 8 million in line with market feedback.

The result established a record price for a knockdown in the area (486m² overlooking the port of Pistool vessel).
