The PGA Tour has announced that they will delete the starting trick format of the Tour Championship after negative feedback from players, including master champion Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy may have influenced an important change in the PGA Tour policy, after officials have listened to recoil and have deleted the controversial start-stick format on the Tour Championship. The Tour veteran and three times crowned champion of the event has long been vocally with its aversion to the system.
The ruling enabled the FedExcup leader to start at the age of 10 under Par, with the rest, depending on their ranking since the introduction in 2019. Commissioner Jay Monahan listened to the dissatisfaction and confirmed a shake-up.
From this year on, all participants will rely on the traditional Even-PAR-Start on the same basis. The top scorer will not only achieve the FedEx cup, but also secure a large bonus and an extensive five-year exemption on the Tour.
Not someone to hold back, McIlroy expressed his frustration in 2019. He said: “You can shoot the best score of the week and not win the tournament. If that happens to someone, it will be difficult for them to wrap their heads around.
“I get it from the point of view of a fan experience, I get it from giving boys who played better all year round, but I don’t know.
“We had breakfast with a few sponsors, and what I said to them was:” If the PGA Tour tries to do championships this season, which starts with the players in March, then goes through the four Majors and culminates with the FedEx Cup at the end.
“If the FedEx Cup really wants to have this inheritance in the game like some of these other championships, people start the tournament in different songs the best way to do it?”
PGA star Sam Burns also introduced earlier in April and pronounced his dismay and said: “At the moment it is a bit confusing for fans to have a tournament where we start all year round and then start in our biggest tournament of the year. There is a bit of a divorce.”
Last year’s winner, Scottie Scheffler, started the event on 10-under and ended on 30-under to defeat fellow American Collin Morikawa with four strokes. Morikawa started the competition at four o’clock. Speaking in Atlanta last August, Scheffler shared his concerns in a statement, according to the mirror us.
“Moving the Tour Championship to a more direct format with a more difficult course setup makes it easier for fans to follow and offers a more challenging test for players who brings out the best competition,” he said.
“We want the Tour Championship to be the most difficult tournament to be eligible and the FedEx Cup trophy is the hardest to win.”
Monahan has stated that “the announcement is an important first step in the evolution” of the season finale. In recent years, a whole series of suggestions have been made about how the Tour can better recognize the seasonal classification.
One of them had been a knockout matchplay event, in which players introduce the event in different phases according to their ranking on their way to the last tournament of the campaign.
Other ideas include a similar Playoff -based system. The new format is played in this year’s Tour Championship in East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta from 21 to 24 August.
