Before the rough abuse of Rory McIlroy of the Gallery became one of the more unfortunate storylines of the Ryder Cup 2025, McIlroy made his own headlines when he called his American opponent, Bryson Decchambeau.
“I think that the only way he gets attention is to mention by other people,” McIlroy told the Guardian. “That is actually what I think of that. To get attention he will mention me or scottie [Scheffler] Or others. ”
The comments from McIlroy came from an interview that took place at the Tour Championship in August, but were first published in the days before the Ryder Cup started. They were also a question for a question about comments from Dephambeau earlier this summer MensmagazineIn which Deschambeau said he would be ‘chirping [McIlroy’s] Ear ”at the Ryder Cup.
On-site on Bethpage recognized his rivalry with McIlroy, but said his comments were made in sporting pleasure.
“Whatever Rory says and whatever – awarded, I meant nothing else than I was excited. I hope we can have a good chat back and forth, and if not, if he wants to do what he is doing, great, no problem,” Dephambeau told Todd Lewis of Golf Channel. “There is a rivalry between all of us golfers. Is it raised with Rory? Of course you can make it that way. But look, when we go out of the Arena, we try to be the best we can be, and if it helps to help the golf game then great, it is that way.”
Deschambeau and McIlroy have never confronted each other for three days of competition game, but their rivalry extends beyond the Ryder Cup. Dechambeau is one of the biggest stars in Liv Golf, while McIlroy has remained an avid PGA Tour -loyalist. Decchambeau also defeated McIlroy on the US Open 2024 in Pinehurst, and the two did not speak when they played together during the final round in the Masters 2025, which won McIlroy to complete the career Grand Slam.
So it may not be a surprise that the European Ryder Cup victory on Sunday was a cathartic for McIlroy, who flowed through the brutal environment in Bethpage to go 3-1-1 in five games for Europe. And during the celebration of the team, cameras conquered McIlroy and made a pointed explanation.
Assisted by teammate Matt Fitzpatrick – who after seven holes 5 was on Dechammu in Singles before he finally settled for a draw on the last hole – McIlroy carefully positioned a European flag to cover the name of Deschambeau.
Although it seems that McIlroy is currently the upper hand in his struggle with Dephambeau, fans are already marking the calendar for the 46th edition of this epic biennial event: 13-19 September 2027, in Adare Manor in Ireland. The countdown of Ryder Cup now starts.
