Rory Mcilroy knows the delight of beating the Americans on a home floor in the Ryder Cup. The five -time big champion has also felt the sting of losing a Walker Cup.
So it would be no surprise that McIlroy on the eve of the 2025 Walker Cup on Cypress Point, who was in the GB&I team of 2007 that the Walker Cup lost in Royal County, sent a confident and motivating message to Luke Poulter and the rest of the GB & I team of this year.
According to Brently Romine from Golf Channel, players of GB & I received a minute -long video from McIlroy On Friday evening, just a few hours before their foursomes match started on Saturday morning.
“If someone who played a Walker Cup and could not get it done completely, and then play Ryder Cups and beat the Yanks in their own backyard, nothing feels better,” said McIlroy in the message, per Romine.
When, McIlroy, who was part of the last Ryder Cup team that won on its way – the European team of 2012 that the comeback “Miracle at Medinah” took out – ended his message with a promise about the outcome of the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
“Please defeat them because I know we are going to beat them on Bethpage,” said McIlroy.

The 2025 Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team consists of Poulter, son of Ryder Cup -legend Ian Poulter, and recent American amateur -Breakout -star Niall Shiels Donegan. In the meantime, the United States team comprises world no. 1 amateur Jackson Koivun, amateur Championship winner Ethan Fang and the American amateur winner Mason Howell.
Poulter, an emerging junior at the University of Florida, does not remember that he saw how McIlroy and his father returned to Medina in 2012. But while his love for Golf developed, he went back and looked at the comeback. That is something that he believes he will be able to lean if he and GB and I need it on Cypress Point this weekend.
‘The stuff [Ian Poulter] Just talk about it because they were in a dark place in the entire team and they were no longer in the group, “said Luke Poulter on Friday about the Ryder Cup 2012.” Just like never giving up; Everything can happen. The only thing you need is a little momentum and the other team can also come back to a dark place. We don’t really talk about it, but in a moment like this it might come a bit. But I watched it again a few times, the “Wonder at Medinah” to give me a little inspiration to hopefully play like him. “
As far as McIlroy is concerned, he and the European team of 2025 are three weeks away from arriving in Bethpage Black as light underdogs for the Americans. McIlroy promised a victory at Bethpage after the Europeans won in 2023 at Marco Simone in Rome. He did not remove that faith and is planning to place a Capper on a historic season – one in which he completed the career Grand Slam by winning the Masters – with a victory over Long Island.
“There is a reason why every Ryder Cup has gone to the home team in the last 10 years,” McIlroy said at the Irish Open earlier this week. “So we know it will be very difficult, but I really think we have 12 boys and the captain and the vices and the other stakeholders, we have all the ingredients. We just have to put them in the oven, and hopefully it all works for us.
“When I look at my career and my whole picture like a golfer, I actually did everything I wanted,” said McIlroy. “I think everything is a bonus after that, but you have to rule your goals again. The only thing for me this year to re -assess my goals, an Away Ryder Cup, after everything that happened this year, I would be – I would look back on 2025, and there would be no way to have a better year. Year of my career.”
