Rooney: Salah’s interview was disrespectful, arrogant and premeditated

Wayne Rooney insists Mohamed Salah is “destroying his legacy” by disrespecting his Liverpool teammates and manager Arne Slot over his inflammatory comments at Elland Road on Saturday.

Salah stated in an interview after the 3-3 draw with Leeds that he had been “thrown under the bus”, had no relationship with Slot and that Saturday’s game with Brighton could be his last game at Anfield.

The 33-year-old Egyptian forward was angry at being named to the bench for a third consecutive season as Liverpool reacted to the early collapse of their Premier League title defence.

“Why? Why would you come out and say that?” said former Manchester United striker Rooney on The Wayne Rooney Show.

“It’s disrespectful to his teammates, his manager and the fans. It’s unbelievable that he came out with what he did.”

“He is absolutely destroying his legacy at Liverpool. The legacy he can have is huge. Some of the legends who have played for Liverpool and he is right up there with them.”

“It would be sad for him to throw everything away and the way he has gone about it by not playing and sitting on the bench, he has gone about it completely wrong.

“Liverpool fans – I know many – will not accept these comments, but that is a shame.

“To have the arrogance to say that he doesn’t have to earn his place because he has already earned his place, you have to be at your best every week to try to stay in the team.

“If I was one of his team-mates I wouldn’t be happy at all with what he said because this is where Liverpool need him most. He has thrown Liverpool under the bus with his words.”

‘Arne Slot must now leave Mo Salah out’

Liverpool play Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday before hosting Brighton this weekend and Rooney believes Salah should not be involved in either match.

“Arne Slot needs to show his authority and just bring him in and say, ‘Listen, you’re not traveling with the team. What you said is not acceptable. Go to the African Cup of Nations and let everything calm down,'” Rooney said.

“If Slot keeps him in the selection, there will be questions. If I were Arne Slot, I would never have him anywhere near the team.”

“From next week he will be given the protection that he is away with Egypt, and he did his timing for a reason.

“Very premeditated what he did. He did it so he can drop that bomb and then leave with Egypt.”

“That would be a good thing for Liverpool, to get him out of the way with what has happened and concentrate on the new players.”
