Wayne Rooney has defended himself after criticism from NFL -Superster Tom Brady, who called the comments about his work ethics ‘very unfair’ and claimed that Brady did not really understand ‘football’ during his short term of office as manager of Birmingham City.
Brady’s documentary criticism arouses Rooney Response
Rooney’s response followed Brady’s question about the dedication of the English legend in the Amazon Prime documentary series “Build in Birmingham: Brady & The Blues”, which was first broadcast on August 1, 2025.
After a visit to the Birmingham training field in November 2023, Brady expressed worries in the documentary about the work ethics of former head coach Rooney.
The documentary conquered Brady’s visit the day before a competition, where the seven-fold super bowl champion observed what he considered a lack of Rooney during his troubled 83-day Stint as a manager. Brady also described the players of Birmingham from that period as “lazy and entitled” in the same documentary.
Speaking of his new BBC -Podcast ‘The Wayne Rooney Show’, which will be launched on Friday, Rooney expressed his disappointment about the assessment of Brady.
“I think Tom came in once, which was the day for a match where the days are a bit lighter anyway, and I don’t think he understood football so well,” said Rooney.
The former striker of Manchester United emphasized the fundamental differences between American football and football and said: “Football is not a NFL – NFL works three months a year. Players also need rest, so I think he was very unfair in the way he came out and figured it out.”
Brady, part of the acquisition of the Knighthead Capital Management, became minority owner of Birmingham City in August 2023 and adopted the position of chairman of the advisory board.
Only two months later, in October 2023, Rooney was appointed as manager and inherited a team that was sixth in the championship table under previous manager John Eustace.
However, Rooney’s Stint turned out to be bothered, because Birmingham won only two games of the 15 and dropped to the 20th position in the championship. After his resignation of January 2024, the performance of the club could not improve and Birmingham was banned to League One.
Although he was criticized, Rooney defended his own approach, while he still respected Brady’s performance.
“Listen, I respect Tom Brady enormously. He is one of the greatest, if not the greatest athletes of all time,” Rooney noted.
He nevertheless claimed that Brady’s assessment was based on limited observation and insufficient awareness of the specific requirements of football.
