Rolls-Royce has made many one-off and special editions that had space with a theme, such as the Specter Lunaflair and the Cullinan Blue Shadow, and for years, buyers are able to adjust the characteristic headliner of the brand to portray the night sky at specific times in time, complete with shooting stars. But Rolls-Royce’s newest tailor-made creation with space theme is perhaps the most incredible to date: the Cullinan Cosmos, the headliner has an “essential interpretation” of the Melkweg, painted by a single artist for more than 160 hours.
The Cullinan Cosmos was put into use via Rolls-Royce’s Private Office Dubai by “A family who shares a fascination for the universe with their four-year-old son”, and apparently the car was “delivered on time for a special occasion”. I loved dinosaurs when I was four, why did my parents not give me a custom dinosaur theme Rolls-Royce? Ugh, life is not fair. Phil Fabre de la Grange, the head of the tailor-made division of the Automaker, said that the Cullinan Cosmos “shows how Rolls-Royce brings the extraterrestrial visions of customers to life with drama, depth and absolute precision.”
Paint inspired by Moonlight
The customers kept the outside of the Cullinan Cosmos fairly simple. It is painted in Arabescato Pearl, a color that is apparently made only for this car that says Rolls-Royce says “the soft shine of moonlight over a midnight sky”. There is a twin coachline in Charles Blue for a little contrast, and the wheel center caps that are colored to the paint is an underestimated option. The enlightened spirit of ecstasy made of frosted glass is also appropriate.
Charles Blue and Grace White leather with Grace White Contrast Stitching and Piping provides a subtle, beautiful color scheme on the inside. Instead of wood veneer there is piano-white trim, with a unique star cluster design painted by hand on the dashboard panel. That blue, white and yellow design is also embroidered on the door panels and headrests. Instead of the standard rear seat chair, the customers went for the compelling chair option, which add a fixed center console, massage and further back functions for the two rear seats, a glass partition wall between the cabin and cargo space, and a fridge with champagne flutes and a whiskey-decanter, of which I will certainly enjoy that four-year.
A real work of art
Of course the main event is the Melkweg -inspired roof. Although Rolls-Royce has made many extravagant headliner designs in recent years, this is the first time that a Starlight headliner has been completely painted by hand and looks incredible. Rolls-Royce has released a video that is told by the artist (who is strangely called) that gives us a great look behind the scenes at the process of making the headliner, making the whole thing even more special. “I get as much freedom as I need to give it an artistic touch and make it a unique piece of it,” she says, “looking at the Melkweg Every day I am reminded of how small we are and how beautiful the world around us can be.”
Acrylic paint dries on leather even faster than on canvas, making it more difficult than a regular-degular painting, and the artist says that the irregular surface and curved sections were a real challenge that encourages her to explore new techniques. First the entire headliner was painted black, so it is not only black leather as a basis but real paint. The artist then outlined the design with a white Chinese marker to get the layout and proportions well before he started using the acrylic paint. Acrylic combines well with water, which was useful to get a natural color current and really reach the milky look that the Milky Way is named after. More than 20 consecutive applications of acrylic paint were used, with many different brushes to reach depth and dimension. To get the fog effect, a make -up brush was used, so the lightest layer of pigment would dry during contact, while the painted stars were made with fine brushes and a specking technique.
But don’t worry, the headliner still has the actually illuminated “stars” that give it the Starlight name. The perforations for the fiber -optic stars were made after the painting was completed and sealed, and each was individually positioned and punched by hand in a way that follows the star design. Unfortunately, Rolls did not say how many enlightened stars can be seen in the headliner, but in some cases it is almost 2,000.
