Rolinginthedeep takes Gordon Lockman Memorial

The Cranbourne Harness Racing Club paid tribute to the late Gordon Lockman at its meeting last Sunday (18/1) with the annual Gordon Lockman Memorial over 2080 metres, taken out by four-year local trainer Jayne Davies. Rock N Roll heaven–Some dream somewhere gelding Rolinginthedeep.

Gordon was a highly respected member of the harness racing community and held the position of Chairman of the Harness Racing Media Association until his passing.

Some years earlier he was also secretary manager of Cranbourne, overseeing races such as the Cranbourne Chervonet and Humbletonian, both of which he had instigated.

He also played a key role in the Cranbourne Pacing Cup in 1980 when the great Paleface Adios, piloted by Colin Pike and making its final racing appearance, was successful in front of a record crowd. Melbourne’s three television stations, Channels 7, 9 and 10, all sent their sports reporters to the track by helicopter to cover the event.

After the race, the presentation area was flooded with customers who had made the trip just to see the Temora Terror in action.

Back to Sunday, Rolinginthedeep (Rock N Roll heaven), played by Noel Alexander and Kevin Morgan, who was part of the large syndicate that bred him, achieved a courageous victory.

Locked in from gate four as Colorado Girl, from gate two, led ahead of Chris Alford, top rider James Herbertson sent Rolinginthedeep to the front in an attempt to pass the leader with about 1600 meters to go. The move proved fruitless, leaving him exposed for the rest of the trip.

Rolinginthedeep came to the fore on the final bend and raced clear to score 12.4 meters from Love A Belle, who finished from three pins along the sprint track to give Cranbourne the quinella. Quick Crunch also used the sprint track of five back past the markers to finish third, half a head away. The kilometer speed was 1:59.3.
