Shafali Verma was the star of the innings and she played one of the biggest knocks by an Indian in the history of the ICC Cricket World Cup. She hit an aggressive 87 runs off 78 balls, with 7 fours and 2 sixes.
Deepti Sharma also hit an excellent half-century, while Smriti Mandhana (45), Richa Ghosh (34), Jemimah Rodrigues (24) and Harmanpreet Kaur (20) also scored crucial runs.
While defending the target, the hosts continued to pick up wickets at regular intervals, and the only batter to trouble the bowlers was Laura Wolvaardt. Modern batsman Wolvaardt had completed a sensational century before being dismissed by Deepti Sharma.
Sharma was also the star of the bowling show as she bagged a historic haul of five wickets, while Shafali Verma took two wickets and Shree Charani got one wicket as India bowled out South Africa for 246 to win the World Cup.
Indian players erupted in wild celebrations after winning the match, while Rohit Sharma, who was sitting in the stands, looked quite emotional and had tears in his eyes as he saw the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side win the World Cup. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana also shed tears of joy after the triumph.

Impact of India’s Women’s World Cup victory!!
Speaking on Sky Sports, former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik spoke about the importance of the Women’s World Cup. He said:
“When you come to a match like this, the World Cup final, ambitions become achievements. You have to be ready for it, but at the same time you have to control your heart rate a little bit, take a deep breath, understand that you have a ball in your hand, get it to the right place. When you have a bat in your hand, see what the bowler is bowling and react to that instinctively.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself. Yes, today is the kind of day that is all-consuming, but if you want to be part of that story, it’s all about controlling your heart rate, your emotions and most importantly, being aware of what the situation is telling you. Play the situation, don’t play the opportunity.”
Dinesh Karthik added that the World Cup win would motivate India’s young girls to pick up the bat and ball. He said:
“There are a lot of young girls in India who will watch this, and somewhere, someone will pick up a bat and say, I want to do something like this. That dream is what these girls are doing. They are going to become women today and inspire a generation to follow.
“In 2017, when Harmanpreet Kaur played that beautiful innings in England against Australia, a lot of people woke up and said, wow, women’s cricket, that looks beautiful. Today is their chance to shine. DY Patil is back and all you can see is blue, but there are plenty of others out there who want this Indian dream to fulfill that great story because they have the talent.”
