World No. 1 ODI breach and test captain Shubman Gill will take over as the new captain of India in one-day internationals prior to the upcoming Australian tour. The decision to remove Rohit Sharma if Captain was taken during a selection meeting led by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar on Saturday in Ahmedabad.
Rohit last led India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, where they won a victory in the final against New Zealand. The right-handed batter returns to Competitive Cricket in the ODI series next to former Captain Virat Kohli. He last played competitive cricket during the IPL 2025 season.

India will be planned to play three odis from 19 to 25 October and five T20is from October 29 to November 8 during their tour in Australia. Rohit Sharma was expected to led the side, but selectors chose to look beyond the 38-year-old after consulting Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

Rohit and Virat Kohli were withdrawn from test cricket for the tour of England. They had already left T20i’s after the World Cup victory of India last year. The barrier duo is only active in the 50-over format in international cricket.
There was initial uncertainty about their participation in Australia, but the veterans focused on fitness. Rohit trains in Mumbai under Abhishek Nayar and Kohli is preparing for the series in London.
