What happens if you work a luxury car maker, a 20-time Grand Slam champion and one of the most celebrated Tennis tournaments? Well, in San Francisco the answer is six freshly shown public tennis courts in John McLaren Park.
This is the newest chapter of Neon Legacy, a joint initiative launched in 2021 by Roger Federer and Mercedes-Benz To make tennis more accessible and to leave something tangible in every host city of the Laver Cup (named after the Australian tennis player, Rodney George Laver, who has 11 Grand Slam Singles titles to his name).
For the San Francisco project, Neon Legacy worked together with the Laver Cup and the USTA Foundation. Together they delivered upgrades that follow similar projects in London, Vancouver and Berlin and San Francisco is now joining a global map of communities that benefit from this model of cooperation between companies and athlete.
Earlier this week, Federer was accompanied during the event by the former professional tennis player and the current Laver Cup captain Yannick Noah and mayor of San Francisco, Daniel Lurie, and various prominent figures from the Bay Area, who cut the ribbon alongside children of local tennis programs. These spaces are intended to inspire the next generation of young athletes who otherwise have limited access to the sport and also organize a series of programs.
“Tennis has formed my life, and I hope this project inspires the next generation.” -Roger Federer, 20-way Grand Slam Champion, co-founder of the Laver Cup
After the Golden Gate Park, John McLaren Park was the second largest public park in San Francisco and before this initiative the courts needed attention. For local families, this new display will reduce the entry thresholds and renewed facilities, and for a luxury brand such as Mercedes-Benz it has a social impact at community level. The German Automaker also continues its tradition of delivery G-Class SUVs As team cars, together with an exclusive shuttle fleet for civil servants and selected guests.
With the 8th edition of the Laver Cup for Chase Center this weekend (19-21 September), the city expects to attract international attention, and although the presence of the Swiss Maestro only increased the visibility of the project, the structural changes on the ground should survive this headline moment.
