It doesn’t sit well with us how Chris Paul’s NBA career likely ended. Not that the solution is a reunion with the Phoenix Suns, that ship sailed a long time ago.
This roster is simply too intense defensively and can play at a speed that others would struggle to match to even think about bringing in a 40-year-old, even if he does enter Ring of Honor one day.
Paul to the Houston Rockets makes sense to everyone
But what about the “Point God” returning to another former team of his in the form of the Rockets? It kind of makes sense, and Dwyane Wade is a fan of the idea.
To be clear, the Rockets are no Chris Paul away from winning a championship, but he does look like a cheap and available candidate to hold down the fort until Fred VanVleet returns from his ACL injury.
Houston also appears to be one of the few franchises that can hide Paul defensively.
Their combination of athletic wings like Amen Thompson and the jumbo lineups with Steven Adams and Alperen Sengun, ideal for hiding a player whose mind is willing to do so, but the body will no longer accommodate.
If this were to happen and be successful, it would be detrimental to The Valley for a number of reasons. Most importantly, it could allow the Rockets to finish the regular season above the Suns.
This was a given when the trade for Kevin Durant fell through, but as of this writing the Suns are just two games behind the much more desirable Texas team in the loss column.
But it would really suck to see Durant and Paul there together, alongside a younger, deeper and better roster than the Suns could ever hope to field.
It was a tandem that was cut short by also trading Paul for Bradley Beal, and while both ended up on the scrap heap with the LA Clippers, it was hardly a decision that worked.
Suns fans wouldn’t trade what they have now for more of Durant and Paul, but it would be bittersweet if Houston then starts to figure some things out.
However, if the alternative is one of the best to have them disappear from the competition without a proper goodbye, then maybe we should just keep calm with this unexpected reunion.
