Ignacio Buse upset the Brazilian crowd by beating their home favorite Joao Fonseca in the second round of the Rio Open on Thursday.

The Peruvian recovered to beat the young Brazilian 5-7 6-3 6-4, taking full advantage of Fonseca’s 45 unforced errors in the two-hour, 26-minute match.
“Today was a very difficult match,” Buse said. “We all know the potential that Joao has. We are really good friends. So that was also difficult today,” said Buse, who became the first Peruvian to reach the quarterfinals of an ATP 500 event in 17 years.
“I tried to handle the pressure as best I could,” Buse added. “I did well today. And if I do poorly next time, I will learn and try to do better.”
Buse has now risen from 230 a year ago to 91, a career high for the 21-year-old.
After the match was postponed for an hour due to rain, Buse kept his composure under pressure and saved eight of the final break points he faced, including three in the opening game of the second set and three at 4-3 in the third.
The youngster hit eight aces as he secured a well-deserved victory to reach the last eight of a 500, even pitting himself against the great Italian Matteo Berrettini, who defeated Dusan Lajovic 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a nail-biting match lasting two hours and nine minutes.
In other action, eighth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry advanced to the last eight with a 7-6(1) 6-4 victory over Lithuanian qualifier Vilius Gaubas, who was aiming to reach his first tour-level quarter-final.
The Argentine missed a match point at 5-2 in the second set when rain stopped play as he stepped up to serve for the match.
On their return, the Italian was broken, but he immediately broke back to close out the match and secure his place in the quarter-finals after two hours and seven minutes of play.

Etcheverry next meets Lucky Loser Jaime Fatia, a 7-6(1) 6-4 winner over Damir Dzumhur in two hours and three minutes.
