The official X (formerly Twitter) account of the International press agency Reuters has been withheld in India and caused widespread attention on social media on Saturday evening. Several users reported that the @reuters -handle showed a message stating that it was “withheld in response to a legal question”.
The block seems to be region -specific, because the account remains accessible outside India. Shortly thereafter it turned out to be @reuterworld account in India, although no official statement has been issued by the Indian authorities, Reuters or the X platform.
From now on the reasons for the action remain unclear, including whether it comes from a specific legal order or content -related issue.
Interestingly, various other Reuters-Lied handles, including Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Pictures, Reuters Asia and Reuters China, remain accessible in India.
According to the declared guidelines of X, content or accounts can be withheld in specific regions if the company is forced to meet a valid legal requirement, such as a judicial order, or if it receives a report that quotes violation of local laws.
It remains uncertain whether the block is temporary or permanent, and there is no clarity about the nature of the legal requirement.
