Ted Danson returns as the retiree turned mole and now heads to Wheeler College, where he goes undercover as an engineering professor to find out who is blackmailing the school’s president.
Charles enlists a number of familiar allies – played by Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sally Struthers and John Getz. Eager to tackle another big undercover case, Charles Nieuwendyk (Ted Danson) gets his chance when a mysterious blackmailer targets Wheeler College President Jack Berenger (Max Greenfield), who enlists Charles to go undercover as a professor. Who makes these threats? Does it have anything to do with iconoclastic billionaire Brad Vinick (Gary Cole), a Wheeler graduate, and his proposed donation to the school? Charles finds no shortage of possible suspects, but his attention is diverted by free-spirited music teacher Mona (Mary Steenburgen), whose zest for life stirs up feelings he thought he had buried after his wife’s death. At this stage of his life, is he ready to open his heart again? And more importantly: has he fallen for the criminal he has to unmask?
Meanwhile, his daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) is inspired by her father’s changes and discovers a long-ignored passion, while PI Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) embarks on her own journey of growth as she reconnects with an important figure from her past.
