Retired jockey Trevor McCarthy becomes HISA consultant * The Racing Biz

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) today announced that retired jockey Trevor McCarthy has joined the organization as HISA’s Jockey Wellness Consultant, a new role dedicated to promoting the health, safety and overall wellbeing of riders across the country.

McCarthy began riding racehorses at the age of nine, following in the footsteps of his father, veteran jockey Michael McCarthy. He quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the leading riders on the Maryland circuit. Over the course of his career, he won multiple driving titles at Laurel Park and Pimlico Racecourses and recorded numerous stakes victories, including his first Class I racing win aboard Highland Chief in the 2022 Man O’War Stakes at Belmont Park. McCarthy piloted 1,871 winners with winnings of more than $76 million before retiring in August 2024.

“Trevor’s first-hand knowledge of life in the saddle and his genuine commitment to jockey well-being make him a valuable addition to our team,” said HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus. “His insight and experience will strengthen our ongoing efforts, together with Jockeys’ Guild, to develop programs that support the overall health and safety of riders across the country.”

In his new role, McCarthy will work with HISA’s Racetrack Safety Committee, Horsemen’s Advisory Group and Medical Advisory Committee to enhance communications, education and wellness initiatives for active riders. From his perspective as a recently retired jockey, he will help HISA better address the challenges riders face both on and off the track.

“I am honored to join HISA and contribute to an organization focused on supporting riders and making the sport safer for everyone involved,” said McCarthy. “After a lifelong career as a jockey, I know how important it is to have resources that meet both the physical and mental demands of this profession, and I am eager to help amplify that support and resources for my fellow riders.”
