Report: William Nylander of Maple Leafs eliminated vs. Jets, questionable for Monday’s game against Wild

Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander will not play in Saturday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets and is listed as questionable for Monday’s game against the Minnesota Wild. TSN’s Darren Dreger reports.
Nylander was previously listed as questionable by head coach Craig Berube for Saturday’s game following Friday’s practice. The 29-year-old aggravated his lower-body injury during Thursday’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights. He previously missed six games with the condition, originally suffered on December 27 against the Ottawa Senators, and returned to the lineup on January 10 against the Vancouver Canucks.

“He’s still being evaluated. He’s questionable for (Saturday),” Berube said of Nylander after Friday’s practice. “That’s a good question. I can’t answer that. With the last one I thought it would be faster, and obviously it wasn’t. We’ll just see how he feels going forward. I can’t really answer that question.”

Nylander leads the Maple Leafs with 48 points (17 goals, 31 assists) in 37 games. If he’s out long-term, it would be crushing for a Maple Leafs team fighting for a playoff spot in a closely contested Eastern Conference race after a dismal start to the year.

Jacob Quillan is expected to take Nylander’s spot in the lineup, via David Alter of The Hockey News. Quillan didn’t score in three games with the Maple Leafs this season, but he has been productive at the AHL level, with eight goals and 27 points in 28 games with the Toronto Marlies.

Toronto is entering a tough stretch of its schedule, with the Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, Vegas Golden Knights, Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabers in the next five games following the conclusion of the road trip. Going this route without Nylander will be a real test for a team that has been able to generate consistent offense all year, as he is the most dynamic playmaker on the Leafs.
