Report: Liverpool duo could plausibly leave Anfield in January despite Reds’ injury crisis

Liverpool could plausibly sanction the departure of a number of players in the January transfer window, despite the current threadbare status of Arne Slot’s side.

According to the First injuries website, the Reds could be without as many as six players due to injury for the match against Wolves on Saturday, and that does not include the absences of Mo Salah (Africa Cup of Nations) and Dominik Szoboszlai (suspended).

Long layoffs for Giovanni Leoni and Alexander Isak have contributed to scarce depth in defense and attack, although a report from a trusted source suggests players in both parts of the pitch could leave L4 next month.

Liverpool duo touted for possible January exits

The latest edition of The Athletics’s Transfer DealSheet was published on Boxing Day morning and two Liverpool youngsters have been touted for possible January exits.

The winter window has been described as an ‘ideal’ opportunity for Trent Kone-Doherty to move on loan, with clubs continuing to monitor the 19-year-old winger’s progress.

Meanwhile, Rhys Williams is expected to attract ‘new interest’ in the coming weeks after failing to secure a temporary move from Anfield over the summer.

Neither is likely to play much for Liverpool this season

Even with Liverpool short of first-team players over the festive period, it is entirely plausible that the club could let the aforementioned duo leave in January.

While Kone-Doherty could provide great attacking depth from the bench if required, Anfield’s chiefs could feasibly sanction a loan exit for a freshly signed player. two substitute cameos in domestic cups for the Reds’ first team.

The teenager could benefit hugely from senior contact at an EFL club in the second half of the season, provided the team he joins could offer him regular game time and not just assign him to a waiting list from the substitutes’ bench.

As for Williams, even a shortage of centre-backs since Leoni’s ACL injury has given him no real chance under Slot, with the 24-year-old not even included in a matchday squad since he was an unused substitute in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton in September.

The Preston native memorably featured alongside Nat Williams during the 2020/21 season as Liverpool miraculously saved Champions League qualification, but it is undeniably clear that he is not in our current head coach’s plans.

An EFL club could look to loan the defender for half a season before his Anfield contract expires next summer. If that were to happen and he had a positive impact, it would be feasible for a permanent agreement to be concluded that would come into effect from July 1.

With neither player likely to get a chance from Slot in the second half of the season, they could plausibly be loaned out in January and hopefully enjoy some much-needed first-team exposure in the first few months of 2026.
