West Brom are set to lose loanee Toby Collyer as Manchester United recall him in January as he recovers from injury, reports say Fabrizio Romano.

West Brom go into the game on Boxing Day with Bristol City in 16th place in the Championship table. It was a difficult campaign for WBA, who lost three of their last four league games.

The bad run has increased the pressure head coach Ryan Masonalthough he continues to have the support of the club hierarchy. While the Baggies have been relatively solid at home, their struggles on the road have been a major problem.

Ahead of their clash with Bristol City, West Brom have received some negative news as the January window looms. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on X that Manchester United will remember Toby Collyer at the turn of the year.

Collyer has been back at United for around a month as he recovers from injury. However, he will not return to WBA once he recovers and will remain in Manchester.

The midfielder could be loaned out again at the end of January if he recovers. He could be used by Manchester United if they cannot secure midfield cover in the winter.

A change of plans after recent comments from Mason

After Collyer’s last injury, Mason reiterated that this was the intention should still keep the Manchester United youngster for the entire loan period. However, he acknowledged that the Premier League club will understandably want to scrutinize Collyer as discussions continue.

“We’ve loaned him out for the season. That’s the plan,” Mason confirmed. “Normally, I think any loan player who sustains an injury that is anything more than a minor injury, a major injury, is good for the parent club to look at them to monitor them.

“We are in discussions and hopefully he can do his rehabilitation and come back better. We are investigating it, both clubs.”

Toby Collyer’s West Brom stats

The Worthing-born midfielder broke into the Manchester United first team last season, with the move designed to give him valuable senior experience. Unfortunately, another injury setback appears to further limit his minutes on the field.

With West Brom already missing one midfielder, the Baggies are likely to be looking for a new one. One man WBA has been linked with is Sunderland’s Dan Neil.

They face rival interest from other Championship clubs including Leicester City, Coventry City and Birmingham City. He played a key role in Sunderland’s promotion-winning side last season.

With playing time difficult to come by in the Premier League, he could leave in January. With Collyer leaving, Neil could be a brilliant replacement for the second half of the season.
