The Reds announced on Friday that they selected the contract of right -handed Zach Maxwell from Triple-a Louisville. Colleague -Rights Ian bornwhich has been out since the end of June because of a shoulder decisions, was transferred from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL to create space on the 40-man Roster.
Maxwell, 24, was the sixth Tour of Cincinnati from Georgia Tech in 2022. The Hulking 6’6 ″, 275-pound Righty arranged 24th under Redsprospects on the post-Draft updates of both Baseball America And Mlb.com. He has spent the entire season in Triple-A, throwing 49 2/3 innings out of the bullpen and recorded a 4.17 run average. Maxwell has a plus-plus fastball and slider/cutter, according to those scouting reports, in which baseball America notes that he can “see” when his command is tie in.
However, that is a prominent reservation. Maxwell has a bad order and struggled with walks that go back to his university career, when he ran a combined 20.6% of his opponents in his last two years before he was drawn up. He has scaled that a bit, but this year he has still spoken a free pass to an untenable 14.5% of the opponents in Louisville.
Maxwell can miss bats in large numbers, as one would expect from a huge right -wing speed climbing as high as 102 MPH (and probably even faster for opponents, given the extension that he can get on a 6’6 ″ frame). If he can continue to make an incremental profit with his command, he has been reduced from a running speed of 16% in ’24 to the 14.5% of this year, the entrails of a formidable late game Bullpen weapon. Emilio Paggan is a free agent at the end of the season, while other veterans like Scott Barlow And Brent Ster Both have club options. The first probably does not seem to be picked up, although the last one could return, given his Cincinnati roots and the affordable net net $ 2.75 mm of the option. Anyway, there are some potential openings in the 2026 pen that can be claimed by a few young arms of the organization.
