The story behind the explosion
The Reds fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by Cardinals restricted hitter Ivan Herrera. Noelvi Marte fell behind 0-1 to Matthew Liberatore, but the second pitch of the at bat was a fastball that Marte looked ready for. Liberatore located it right where his catcher asked, but Marte is the one who caught it all as he sent it 450 feet into the left-center stands to tie the game.
Cincinnati took the lead later in the inning, but the game was back and forth. Both teams would score a run in the 8th inning to keep things even and extras would take place. There, the St. Louis scored twice and the Reds fell quietly in what resulted in a 7-5 defeat for the home team.
For Noelvi Marte, the homerun was his 5th of the month and he made it two games in a row with a homerun. The day capped a big three-week streak for Marte, who hit .360/.392/.667 with 12 extra base hits in 18 games from August 9-29.
