The Contender Series of Dana White started in 2017. Since then, the Contender Series has produced a number of large upcoming stars, such as Dan Ige, Sean O’Malley, Geoff Neal, Maycee Barber and Edmen Shahbazyan. In short, it was a huge success for finding talent.
A Contender series Fight is one that has a bet like no other, where fighters must show their skills to impress the UFC President enough for a contract with the promotion giant. Holding the Contender series with a smaller cage in the UFC Apex location ensures a tense atmosphere, and with only good friends and family of the competing hunters who are present as spectators. Emotions always run high, because a limited number of contracts can be issued on a certain night, and many hunters may have their dreams exclusively due to bad luck.
In rare cases, however, a hunter gets a second look. This series will investigate.
Yuri Panferov (8-1 MMA)
Age: 28 years old
Height: 6’1 ″ / Reach: 72.5 ″
Weight class: Middleweight (185 pounds)
First DW’s Contender Series Fight: 2023 (week 10)
Old DW’s Contender Series Opponent: Torrez Finney (6-0 MMA)
Second DW’s Contender Series Fight: 2025 (week 1)
New opponent: Christopher Ewert (7-0)
First Contender Series Fight
Yuri Panferov participated for the first time in the Contender Series in 2023. For that, Panferov had a flawless 6-0 record that usually competed under the Classic Entertainment & Sports Banner of CES, a promotion based in Rhode Island. On the way to DWCS, Yuri had finished all his opponents in the first round. All finishes were by way of submission, except one hunter, Brian IMes, which he tko’d. IMES, Yuri’s fourth opponent was also experienced, with a record of 8-12. The best record for a hunter he fought was 4-4.
First Compenders Series Opponent
Yuri faced Torrez Finney in his first performance at the Serries Compenders. With a fighting weight of 5’8 ″ and 185 pounds. Finney is an absolute tank. Torrez saw the fight get the upper hand on the floor and Panferov submit in the second round. In the end, that implementation was not enough for Finney, because he did not receive a contract from Dana White after the finish.
Finney was invited to the Contender Series the following year after a quick finish at the regional circuit. Torrez managed to win his salvation against Cam Rowson through a unanimous decision. But again, the UFC president has chosen not to sign the substandard middleweight.
Finney received another shot on repayment on the same season from 2024 from the Contender Series 6 weeks later. This time Finney smoked his opponent in 93 seconds and eventually received a UFC contract. Torrez only fought once with the promotion since receiving the contract on 1 October. Finney won a split division against Robert Valentin in April and withdrew from a fight earlier this month. Valentin is 0-3 with the UFC, but Torrez has already proven that he is a hunter who simply cannot be counted on paper.
So contrary to what it seemed two years ago, and possibly even a year ago, this is a loss that is very well outdated for Yuri.
The way back
In the almost two years since Yuri fought in the Contender Series, he fought twice in MMA and he had one pro -gym. Yuri stopped a Rocky Edwards, who starts fighting with a record of 12-10-1, via punches in the second round. That fight was in February 2024 about four months after his first appearance of the competition series.
Yuri took it on 11-6, Khadzhimurat Bestaev, in November and stopped his opponent in the third round via Ground N ‘Pound.
An important comment here is that Panferov really grew and hunted both finishes, because both came of their respective rounds in the last ten seconds. He was also confronted with some of the best competition he has in his career with two hunters with double digits and winning records.
Game plan/new opponent
Before his shot a redemption on the Contender series, Yuri hires an undefeated 31-year-old hunter who has experience in Fury FC.
Christopher Ewert won several middleweight championships on the regional circuit after starting his MMA career in 2022. He has a knee finish of the first round against 11-9 hunter, Matias Ibanez, last July. From there he stopped 5-2, AJ Chambers, in the first round with body shots at Fury FC 97 in October. And in January he defeated another undefeated hunter in Reese Watkins who was 5-0, through a unanimous decision. Ewert has already been tested and the distance went twice in his career despite his 7-0 record and five first round finish.
The Barren Division Middleight of the UFC came in the form of a matchup with Jackson McVey on the Prelims of UFC 317 at the end of June. But unfortunately for Ewert he had problems with his weight area and was forced to withdraw.
But the message is clear, UFC Brass believes that Ewert is already of the caliber to belong to the promotion. Yuri has stepped his game since his last performance for better competition and yacht finishes. A victory here, except a contract finish or not guaranteeing or not, thanks to the state of the division.
