The Red Sox traded one of their top players to the Pirates to help boost their rotation as part of a five-player trade Thursday night.
Outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia and pitcher Jesus Travieso were shipped to Steel City in exchange for right-hander Johan Oviedo and minor leaguers Tyler Samaniego and Adonys Guzman. Tim Healey of the Boston Globe reports this.
Oviedo, 27, became a solid starter for the Pirates after being picked up at the 2022 trade deadline. He started nine games in 2025, striking out 42 batters and posting a 3.57 ERA over 40 1/3 innings while averaging 95.5 mph with his fastball.
The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery that kept him from pitching for the entire 2024 season before subsequently dealing with a lat strain during the build-up in spring training.
He didn’t make his seasonal debut until early August this year.
The bulk of the trade heading to Pittsburgh is undoubtedly Garcia.
Garcia was ranked third among Red Sox prospects by MLB Pipeline and is ranked No. 85 among the top 100 MLB prospects overall.
Garcia has also been nicknamed “The Password” because of his difficult-to-spell first name.
In an interview with NESN earlier this year, Garcia’s father, John, explained where he first heard the nickname.

“We learned about the nickname through social media,” he said. “We already knew that no one from our hometown had ever played in the MLB. It’s huge.”
His brother Johanfran, also in the Red Sox system, is nicknamed “the username.”
The transaction has not been made official by either team.
