Chaim Bloom, president of Cardinal baseball operations, has helped his former team with players like Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras, all while taking a lot of money off his payroll. Now he could give the Red Sox another helping hand by giving them Brendan Donovan, one of the most sought-after trade targets of the offseason.
According to a report from Will Sammon and Katie Woo of The Athletic, both sides have begun trade talks to bring Donovan to Fenway Park.
Red Sox continue to discuss a Brendan Donovan trade
“The Cardinals and Red Sox have discussed a trade for Donovan, as The Athletic reported last week, with Boston looking for an additional middle infielder,” read the report.
Obviously, the Cardinals shouldn’t be in a rush to get a deal done. Donovan is under club control through 2027 and is fresh off his first All-Star selection. He is a versatile and young player who could help several organizations, and it only makes sense that they would consider parting ways with him if they get a fair deal in return.
The Red Sox seemed determined to get back into contention after a disappointing campaign. And with star third baseman Alex Bregman still testing the free-agency waters, landing another Cardinals star would be the best way to appease the fan base.
Donovan hit .287 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI in 118 games in 2025. With the Red Sox struggling to find consistency at second base with Kristian Campbell and David Hamilton, he may be the best choice to get back into contention.
