December 14, 2025 is a date now forever seared into Australian history. What happened on Bondi Beach on that terrible day was the deadliest terrorist attack on our shores. Fifteen innocent people were killed and forty injured when two gunmen unleashed the evil. But from the devastation emerged stories of incredible courage. And of the many people who showed courage under fire, Ahmed Al Ahmed’s story is particularly important. Video broadcast around the world showed him, without any regard for his own safety, confronting and overpowering one of the attackers.

Mr Al Ahmed tells Clancey what possessed him to tackle one of the suspected terrorists, Sajid Akram, and the words he shouted as he disarmed the gunman. He also answers the question many have asked: why didn’t he shoot Akram when he had the chance? Mr Al Ahmed gives a moving explanation of his actions in the Bondi attack; a moment in time that Australians wish had never happened, but are so grateful that people like Ahmed Al Ahmed were there to provide help.
