The Australian Pacing Gold Perth Yearling Sale raised a record $3,705,000 at Sunday’s Magic Millions, with 90 of 133 horses sold for a clearance of almost 70 percent.

The average price of $41,167 was the highest ever for an APG standard breeding sale and the highest price paid of $200,000 was a new record for a WA sale.

A total of 42 stallions sold averaged $43,700 and 42 fillies sold for an average of $38,300.

No fewer than eight yearlings fetched $100,000 or more, with the $200,000 top seller being the Downbytheseaside filly out of Group 1 winner Tenniele Erin, entered by Kevin, Annette and Kody Charles’ KTC Bloodstock and purchased by Leviathan Perth owner Albert Walmsley.

Three of the five top-priced yearlings were sired by Downbytheseaside and the other two were by his Woodlands stallionmate Bettor’s Delight.

The highest price paid for a colt was $180,000 for Trevor and Colleen Lindsay’s Karnup Racing draft’s Downbytheseaside-Falcon’s Gem youngster. It was also secured by Walmsley, who spent a hefty $946,000 for 10 lots that day.

KTC Bloodstock retired four of the ten most expensive yearlings, while Karnup Racing and Mike and Sharron Howie’s Copper Lodge each produced three.

Besides Walmsley, the main buyers were Jim and Willie Giumelli’s Swandoo Harness Racing, which paid out $533,500 for eight lots, Greg and Skye Bond, who shelled out $355,000 for four, and Shardon Lodge, which spent $240,500 for five.

“We are very pleased with how the sale went. Credit really goes to the sellers, breeders and preparers who brought such a strong range of yearlings to the market,” said Anthony Essex, Managing Director of APG.

“It wasn’t just what was on the pedigree page, it was also the way these horses were prepared and presented. The quality across the board was excellent and it certainly didn’t go unnoticed.”

“There have been many people who have said this is the best catalog they have seen in Washington, and some have even suggested it is among the best in the country. When you look at the results, the numbers certainly support that opinion.”

Mr. Essex continued, “One of the most encouraging signs was the increase in buyer registrations. We saw some new faces and some familiar ones who hadn’t been to the sales for a number of years. That kind of support is what keeps the industry moving forward. It shows confidence in the product and in the future of harness racing here in Washington.”

Another first this year was that APG organized a gala evening on the Saturday evening before the sale. The evening included a yearling parade, the annual WASBA awards and a charity auction in support of Fight MND.

“The Gala Night was something really special. To have over 160 people in the room to celebrate the WA Standard industry, it was a fantastic way to start the sales weekend. It was the first time we had held the event before the Perth sale and the response was incredible.” said Mr. Essex

“The Yearling Parade, the WASBA Awards and the FightMND charity auction all came together beautifully. The feedback we have had has been overwhelmingly positive.

“A big thank you to WASBA for hosting their awards as part of the evening and for all they do for the industry here in WA. We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year.”

Mr. Essex indicates that there are still some quality yearlings for sale. For a list of available lots and how to make a bid, see here the results page on the APG website or their social media.
