The UEFA Champions League continues to deliver some exciting battles between Europe’s biggest football clubs, and this week it offers spectators a clash on Merseyside as Premier League champions Liverpool welcome La Liga leaders Real Madrid.
Anfield will host the match on Tuesday, November 4 at 8:00 PM GMT (4:00 PM ET), as part of the fourth round of the Champions League competitive phase.
The match will be of particular importance for coach Xabi Alonso, who returns to Anfield. The Spanish ex-midfielder played 210 games for the club in five years, scoring 19 goals.
Trent Alexander-Arnold also returns to their former home. The former Liverpool vice-captain left his boyhood club to instead join Los Blancos in a controversial transfer this summer.
Despite defeat the last time they visited Anfield just a year ago, Real Madrid’s recent record against Liverpool is emphatic: they have won seven of their last eleven competitive meetings, with one draw and just three defeats.
Matches between these two teams have often been entertaining for the neutral side, with Kylian Mbappe dramatically missing a penalty last time out. In 2023, Real Madrid scored five in a 5-2 win, and in 2008 Liverpool also recorded a memorable 4-0 win.

Coach
His toughest decision will undoubtedly come in defense, where he must choose between continuing with Fede Valverde at right-back or bringing in former Liverpool player Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has not started a game since suffering a hamstring injury in September, although he is now fit and available.
There could also be more defensive absentees. David Alaba has not played since he pulled a muscle against Getafe and could also remain sidelined for this match.
The rest of the squad will be fit and available for Real Madrid, with no further injury concerns. Reserve goalkeeper Andriy Lunin also returns to the side after serving a suspension in La Liga after being sent off in the Clásico clash.
Real Madrid expected line-up vs. Liverpool
Expected line-up of Real Madrid vs. Liverpool: Thibaut Courtois; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, Éder Militão, Álvaro Carreras; Fede Valverde, Aurélien Tchouameni; Arda Güler, Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior; Kylian Mbappe.
Alexander-Arnold is expected to come into the team and start on the right side of defense in what will be only his eighth start since joining Real Madrid from Liverpool ahead of this summer’s Club World Cup.
Another call-up for Xabi Alonso will be on the right flank, where Turkish star Arda Güler could return to the team in place of Franco Mastantuono, who was chosen ahead of Güler and Brahim Díaz for the win over Valencia.
These two attacking options will likely be options off the bench, alongside Brazilian international Rodrygo Goes and Spanish forward Gonzalo García. There could also be reinforcements in midfield from Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Ceballos.
