Washington – Because many Americans throughout the country to obtain their real ID license, some people choose to sign up – by using their valid passport as their preferred form from ID for travel or waiting for their current driver’s license and then renews it.
The real ID requirement will take effect on May 7, when Americans have to have a new form of identification to fly in their own country.
The costs for obtaining the identification vary from state to state. The costs also vary depending on whether travelers get a first real ID or want to extend their existing license.

Other forms of identification that are accepted instead of a real ID include a valid American passport or passport card; DHS trusted traveler cards such as Global Entry; Ministry of Defense IDs; permanent resident cards; and border crossing cards.
With the deadline, Fox News Digital spoke with travelers this week and those who have no or do not intend to get a real ID quickly why they made that decision.

At the Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Washington, DC, Lisa from Oregon said that it was currently a “financial decision”.
Lisa (not a last name shared) said she had not received a real ID so far “because it was an extra costs, and I knew I would rather bring that money in the direction of the passport.”
She said she can decide at a later time to get a real ID.

“When I am traveling later, I have to take my passport with me and I may not want to do that for traveling at the state,” she said.

Some states offer a lower price for the real ID, such as California.
The DMV website of the Golden State says: “In certain circumstances, the reimbursement can be waived or reduced.”
It adds: “You can be eligible to pay a lower application costs for an original or extension -ID card if you meet the income requirements for selected government or non -profit assistance programs.”
It also notes that a “homeless” can be eligible for a no-fee ID card.

And “to be eligible for a no-fee seniors ID card, you must be at least 62 years old,” said in California.
Kelsey from Bloomington, Illinois, said she had just arrived in DC that she didn’t have a real ID, she said.
“I don’t have a real ID yet because I didn’t get the through the journey and our journey ends before May 7, so I didn’t feel urgency to do this,” she said.

She said that because she already has a passport, she feels that it is financially useful to use it right now.
“My ID is going in November, so I plan to do it all at the same time if I have to get one,” she said.
“I didn’t feel an urgency to do this.”
A man named Nick, who also comes from Bloomington, Illinois, said Fox News Digital: “I travel with my passport, so I don’t even use my ID.”

At DCA’s South Security Checkpoint this week a countdown was shown on a monitor that reminded travelers of the deadline.
Paper handouts were also given to travelers who encouraged them to get the new identification.
Victoria van Phoenix, Arizona, said she doesn’t have a real ID.

“I just don’t travel enough,” she said.
She has a passport and said that if it saved her more time at the airport, she would get one.

When asked if she knows someone who does not have a passport or a real ID, she said her parents don’t.
She said she wants her parents to get the real ID so that “they can travel and enjoy retirement.”
She does not believe that they are currently looking at a DMV appointment.
“The DMVs are always quite packaged.”
Lesley from California noted that she has a real ID – but shared that a colleague who did not have the document had to hurry to get one for a work trip.
‘She didn’t have the real id, so she had to see them [the DMV] And get the real ID, and it was about two to four hours of waiting … It was in California. “

She added: “The DMVs are always quite packaged.”
Although the DMVs in some states have added special Saturday hours or long -term weekday hours to meet real ID requests, many motor vehicle agencies are not open during the weekend.
